Hyperdirect pathway - definition

a circuit in the basal ganglia thought to be involved in the suppression or inhibition of movement. The hyperdirect pathway involves neurons that travel directly from the cerebral cortex to the subthalamic nucleus. These projections from the cortex activate subthalamic neurons, which then stimulate GABA neurons in the globus pallidus and substantia nigra, which in turn inhibit neurons in the thalamus that are involved in the facilitation of movement.
