Apoptosis - definition

a process of programmed cell death that may occur during development, in response to stress, or as a routine mechanism of biological maintenance. Unlike cell death that may occur due to trauma or injury to cells, apoptosis is a planned event intended to confer an advantage, and an important part of the life cycle.
