Anterior pituitary - definition
one of the two lobes of the pituitary gland, the anterior pituitary (aka adenohypophysis) synthesizes and secretes a number of hormones. Hormone release from the anterior pituitary is prompted by releasing hormones secreted by the hypothalamus. Thus, the hypothalamus controls hormone release from the anterior pituitary.
