Nucleus ambiguus - definition

nucleus found in the medulla oblongata. The neurons of the nucleus ambiguus innervate muscles of the mouth and throat that are involved with speech and swallowing. The nucleus ambiguus also contains parasympathetic neurons that help to regulate cardiovascular function by decreasing cardiac activity when it increases too quickly.
