Hair cell - definition

receptor cells found in the auditory and vestibular systems. Hair cells have hair-like appendages called stereocilia that extend from the top of the cells. When stereocilia are deflected in response to movement of a hair cell, it results in the opening of ion channels and depolarization of the cell.
